The PS2
Serving as Sony's second foray into the console market, the Playstation 2 had an astronomical level of excitement surrounding it at launch. Blowing past said expectations faster than the PS1 steamrolled the Saturn, the PS2 remains the best-selling console of all time over two decades out.
The success can be attributed to the amount of genre-defining titles released for the platform... as well as the inclusion of a DVD player. Mostly the latter, but one can certainly make a strong case for the games: as Sony's first-parties also forged a stronger identity for themselves this generation, with a focus on high production value and narratives that still influences Playstation Studios titles now.
